Windows Creating a File Within a Folder

Saving a document, spreadsheet, or other item from a program is just one method of putting files into folders. There is a very simple method that allows you to create, name and save a document or spreadsheet from within a folder. Practice the following method to create, name and save a document from inside a folder. There are headings and an audio demonstration link on this page. Use the letter h to move forward through the headings or Shift h to move backward through the headings. When you hear a heading you want to read through, use your down arrow key or "read all" key command. Creating, Naming and Saving a Document or Spreadsheet from Within a Folder

1. Press and hold down the Windows key and hit the letter e to open Windows File Explorer.

2. Press and hold down the Shift key and hit the Tab key again-and-again until you get to the "Tree View." (be patient and listen to your screen reader!)

3. Up arrow to the "Libraries" item.

4. Hit the Enter key one time to activate the "Libraries" item.

5. Right arrow one time to open the "Libraries" item.

6. Down arrow to the "Documents" item.

7. Hit the Enter key one time to activate the "Documents" item.

8. Hit the Tab key again-and-again until you get to the "List View." (be patient and listen to your screen reader!)

9. Hit the Applications key one time.

10. Down arrow to the "New" menu item, or hit the letter w to go to the "New" menu item.

11. Right arrow one time to open the sub menu for the "New" menu item.

12. Down arrow to your word processor. It might be something like "Microsoft Office Word."

13. Hit the Enter key one time only!

14. Type a name for your document.

15. Hit the Enter key one time and you have created, named and saved a document without opening your word processor! You know exactly in which drive and folder you have saved the document.

16. Hit the Enter key one more time to open the document.

17. Type your name.

18. Hit the Enter key one time.

19. Type the date.

20. Press and hold down the Control key and hit the letter s to save the document. No box will come up, and nothing will be spoken by the screen reader because you have already created and named the document.

21. Press the Alt F4 command to close the document and you will be placed directly on top of it in the folder.

22. Hit the Enter key one time and the document will re-open. Notice you are at the top of the document, just to the left of where you typed your name.

23. Press and hold down the Control key and hit the End key on the 6-Pac to move to the bottom of the document.

24. Hit the Enter key one time and you are ready to type a new paragraph starting at the bottom of the document.

25. Type "This is paragraph three" (without the quotes).

26. Press Control s to save the document.

27. Press Alt F4 to close the word processor.

28. Press Alt F4 a second time to close Windows File Explorer.

29. Practice the above steps again-and-again until you are quick and accurate.
